5How to find rhymes using this rhyming dictionaryA rhyming dictionary is a book full of words that rhyme together. Unlike a regular dictionary, where you nd a word based on how it’s spelled, a rhyming dictionary lists words by the beginning vowel of the rhyming sound. 1. Find the ‘Rhyme Sound’ of the WordEvery word has a part that is used to make rhyme connections. This is called the rhyme sound. Rhyme sounds always start with a vowel (A, E, I, O, U, or Y) and continue through the end of the word.Word: hand Word: petRhyme Sound: and Rhyme Sound: etSometimes a word has more than one vowel. You can nd the rhyme sound by saying the word and listening for which vowel sound is the loudest, longest, and/ or has the highest pitch. The rhyme sound begins at that vowel and continues through to the end of the word. Word: fresh Word: ticketRhyme Sound: esh Rhyme Sound: icket2. Search Alphabetically Now search alphabetically for the rhyme sound. This will take you to the group of rhyming words. Below , you will see a list of rhyming words grouped by their number of syllables. APEapecapegrapescrapeshapetapeExample 1Example 2

63. Cross-references Sometimes, you will nd a cross-reference instead of a list of rhyming words. Don’t worry, this means that either the rhyme sound can be spelled more than one way or can be pronounced more than one way. Just search for the cross-reference and it will take you to the group of rhyming words. For example, if you are looking for words that rhyme with ‘soap’, below is what you will nd when searching for the rhyme sound OAP.OAP (as in soap) see OPENumbered Rhyme SoundsWhen the same spelling can be used for more than one sound, we added a number to the rhyme sound. For example, you will nd two listings for the rhyme sound OW because it can be pronounced two dierent ways. USH 1 USH 2 blush bush brush mush crush push ush tush Example Words and Rhyme SoundsFinding the rhyme sound of a word takes a little bit of practice. After a few tries, it gets easier. Below are some example words and their rhyme sounds so you can see the patterns. Word Rhyme Sound back ACK rank ANK belt ELT spy Y If you cannot nd a word you're looking for in the rhyming dictionary, try looking up a dierent word that might rhyme with it.

9Did you know that kids all over the world like to rap? Yes, they do! Did you know that some kids are really good at rapping? Yes, they are! Well, guess what? We wrote this book so that you can have fun learning to write your own rap song. Rap is a type of rhyming poetry that is often performed to a beat. Rap is the music of Hip Hop culture, and some of the rst Hiphoppers were kids just like you! In fact, one of the most famous rappers is KRS-ONE. He is an adult now, but he started in Hip Hop when he was a kid in New York City, the birthplace of Hip Hop. KRS-ONE is a really cool and smart Hip Hop teacher, and he says that “Hip Hop is something you live,” and that “rap is something you do.” Do you know what that means? It means that Hip Hop is a way of living and that rap is something that Hiphoppers create. My First Rap Song: Kid’s Rhyming Dictionary is a book we wrote that’s lled with fun activities and rhyming words to help you learn to write your rst rap. We want you to know that anyone can write raps, and that means you can too! Be creative and have fun.Introduction to Rap
